International Yacht Training Silver Level 2

SILVER LEVEL- SAFE SAILING - DINGHY PROGRAMME COURSE SYLLABUS, FRAMEWORK AND DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE

This is a 2 to 3 day course expanding on the training developed in Level 1 and includes the knowledge required to sail a boat independently.

 

The course covers the skills needed to allow the successful candidate to

be able to sail confidently in all directions.

IYT Silver Lever 2 Dinghy Programme

After completing this course the successful participant will have capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. The same course for adults may be easily condensed to 1 or 2 days.

 

Scope:

A 2 to 3 day course, on board/in class which expands on level 1 Start Sailing. It offers knowledge required to sail independently.

Objective:

The expected learning outcome is that the student will have capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

Entry Standard:

Generally 7 - 12 years of age but left to discretion of the parents. Candidates should have successfully completed the Bronze Level 1- Start Sailing Course or have equivalent competency.

Candidate must be able to swim and have no medical conditions that may be a problem for this type of activity.

 

Certificate and/or Documentation:

Options:

  1. School buys blank paper certificates to give out at end of course

  • Candidates will not be in IYT database

  • School does not return data to us

2. School buys blank paper certificates AND order the plastic credit card style certificates online.

  • Candidates will be in IYT database.

3. School buys only plastic certificates on line

  • School gives candidate a 'temporary certificate' which school can print on site using the IYT temporary certificate template (provided by IYT in word format)

 

Candidate/Instructor Ratio:

IYT recommends no more than 12 students to 1 instructor for theory courses

  • Practical Instructor to student ratio will depend upon the dinghy type, age and skill level of the student, how sheltered the waters are, proximity of beach/base and weather conditions but it is recommended:

  • Maximum 1-2 students to 1 instructor depending on the vessel

 

Specific Staff Requirements:

Instructors will be appropriately qualified to teach dinghy courses.

Teaching Timetable

The school may be flexible in the way and order that the course is delivered. However, the syllabus MUST be covered, and the candidates assessed to the depth of knowledge outlined below.

Exam Policy

There is no formal written exam. Candidates will however be assessed during the practical modules and meet the minimum competencies defined in the Depth of Knowledge section below and as listed on the Dinghy Bronze - Start Sailing - Instructor Checklist.

Syllabus

Depth of Knowledge

At the end of the course the candidate must meet either the "Outline" or the "Working'' level of depth of knowledge. Definitions for each level of DOK are below.

Introductory

The material is introduced to the candidate without the knowledge having to be retained. The candidate is shown how to carry out certain tasks or exercises, and is made aware of the correct and safe way of carrying these out.

Outline

The candidate will need to demonstrate an outline knowledge of the syllabus and should be able to carry out basic tasks the correct and safe way with some supervision.

Working

The candidate will need to demonstrate a working knowledge of the syllabus and be able to carry out tasks without prompting, in a correct and safe way.

Complete

The candidate will need to demonstrate a thorough and complete knowledge of the syllabus and be able to carry out all the tasks without prompting or hesitation in a safe and correct way.
