International Yacht Training Bronze Level 1

BRONZE LEVEL – START SAILING – DINGHY PROGRAMME COURSE SYLLABUS, FRAMEWORK AND DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE


There will be a 3-day course/camp for junior ages 7 to 15 + adults who have never sailed before, which includes an introduction to sailing skills and knowledge to get safely afloat under supervision.​

The successful participant will be able to rig,  launch, sail a triangular course, return the boat safely to shore, and understand and name the parts of the boat they are sailing.

After completing this course, the successful participant will be able to sail a boat competently in all possible directions in light winds.

Certificate and/or Documentation:

  • The school buys blank paper certificates to give out at the end of the course.
    a. Candidates will not be in the IYT database
    b. School does not return data to us
  • The school buys blank paper certificates and orders the plastic credit card-style certificates online.
    a. Candidates will be in the IYT database.
  • The school buys only plastic certificates online
    a. The school gives the candidate a ‘temporary certificate’ which the school can print on site using the IYT temporary certificate template (provided by IYT in Word format)

Candidate/Instructor Ratio:

  • IYT recommends no more than 12 students to 1 instructor for theory courses
  • Practical Instructor to student ratio will depend upon the dinghy type, age and skill level of the student, how sheltered the waters are, proximity of beach/base and weather conditions, but it is recommended:
  • 1 certified instructor (in a power boat) running a course for 5 or 6 students/boats on the water, supported by a second powerboat with a parent/club boatman.

International Yacht Training Worldwide

  • While the instructor may be engaged, concentrating on one particular student, the second powerboat is watching the rest of the dinghies/students.
  • The training area is close to shore.

Specific Staff Requirements: Instructors will be appropriately qualified to teach dinghy courses.

The school may be flexible in the way and order in which the course is delivered. However, the syllabus MUST be covered and the candidates assessed to the Depth of Knowledge outlined
below.

Exam Policy

There is no formal written exam. Candidates will, however, be assessed during the practical
Modules and meet the minimum competencies defined in the Depth of Knowledge section below, and as listed on the Dinghy BronzeStart Sailing – Instructor Checklist.
